Commission of a Work of Art for
Fire Station # 7
LOCATION/CONTEXT: The Albuquerque Arts Board, Albuquerque Fire Department and the Fire Station #7 Art Selection Committee have initiated a 1% for Art project to be funded through the 1% for Art ordinance. The selected public artwork for this project will be located in Albuquerque’s Northwest quadrant at 57th Street and Central Avenue in City Council District 1.
PROJECT INTENT/THEME: The Fire Station #7 Art Selection Committee and the Albuquerque Arts Board seek to commission a work of art that explores the numerous possibilities for LED/Neon inspired lighting that enhances the facility so that it becomes a cornerstone for the community in which it is located on western historic Route 66. Historic Route 66 as Central Avenue takes you through the heart of Albuquerque and is home to the longest intact urbanized stretch of Route 66 in the country with approximately 15 miles running the entire length of the city, east to west. Central Avenue is home to several Art Deco and Streamline Moderne buildings,
historic/vintage motor lodges, trading posts, gas stations and classic neon signs from the heyday of Route 66 and the car culture that has surrounded it. Fire Station #7 will be an integral part of the life of Historic Route 66, the surrounding neighborhood, and the City of Albuquerque.
